Black Violin

Veronica bought me tickets for Christmas to go see Black Violin in concert at the Pantages Theater in downtown Tacoma. But then I quit my job and we sold the tickets because I thought I had to work. Then I didn’t have to work and someone at work gave me tickets to the show. Weird.

Anyway, the few times I’ve been to concerts for bands I’ve never listened to before I haven’t enjoyed myself. Everyone else is singing along and jamming and I’m just standing there trying to enjoy what is going on.

So, while I was pumped to go to this show, I went in not expecting much.

Let me just say: I was blown away. That might be the best show I’ve ever been to.

Black Violin is a group of four guys from Florida – Kevin Sylvester and Wilner Baptiste are the main duo who play the violin and they also feature a drummer and a DJ. They combine hip hop and classical music, though that doesn’t quite do it justice.

Black Violin opens its concert in Tacoma on Feb. 25. The show was sold out.

It’s hard to describe, but seeing people stand up and dance, clap and wave their hands in the air like they just don’t care, while classical music is being played is an experience I can’t say I ever imagined I’d have.

Pantages Theater in downtown Tacoma is a treat. A stunning venue built in 1918.

Anyway, be sure and check out the video and also some of their stuff here.

And if they come to a town near you, grab a ticket. It’s fun.

Random aside: They went to Dillard High School in Florida, which is also home to Guerdiwch Montimere! Guerdwich is the guy who impersonated a high school student in Odessa, Texas, and was the story I broke. Perhaps the biggest of my career. Anyway, I just thought that was kind of funny.
